Arto Noras Taiteellinen johtaja"The high standard and gifted young prize-winners of International Paulo Cello Competitions held in 1991, 1996 and in 2002 has aroused widespread attention among cellists the world over. It is not, however, the sole purpose of a music competition to present prizes, for its mission is also to make music and the instruments on which it is played known to the public at large. Nor should its role in inspiring new generations of musicians be overlooked.

Characteristic for the Fourth Paulo Cello Competition is the amount of concertos. The finalists will be able to play with three different orchestras; during the second round either with the Sinfonia Finlandia Jyväskylä, the Kuopio Symphony Orchestra or the Oulu Symphony Orchestra and at the finals with the Tapiola Sinfonietta and Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra. The selected competition repertoire includes all the major standard concertos.

Important factor in the competition is also the recital that will be played in the first public round. The programme of contestants' choice will allow the participants to show their own preferences and technical skills and also their creativity in planning a concert programme.

I hope that the atmosphere at the Paulo Cello Competition will encourage our competitors to give their best and provide our audiences with an international cello event of the highest, most stimulating standard".
